It's gotta be the sauce

PINE PLAINS — The sky was clear and the smell of barbecuing beef lingered in the air for the estimated 500 people who showed up to the Lions Club pavilion last Saturday, Aug. 8, for the club’s annual barbecue fundraiser.

The beef barbecue is by far the largest event the Lions Club holds. Proceeds go toward many of community activities and programs the Lions Club organizes, including their scholarship fund, assisting the town food locker and the Adopt-a-Family program.

Lions Club member Gary Keeler said they went through 600 pounds of beef. The cooking started around 1 p.m., and town Supervisor Gregg Pulver took the last of the roasts off the coals nearly six hours later.

As at any big-draw cooking event, the secret is in the sauce. Ezra Link used to cater the barbecue for the club. Even though he has since hung up his apron, he stills provides his special sauce for the roast beef roll sandwiches, to the delight of the crowd.

Many local businesses in town help out with the cost of the food, including Meiller’s Slaughterhouse, Peck’s Market and Kessman Farm in Pawling.

“They all give us stuff at cost, explained club member Carl Thomas.

As for attendance, it looked to be one of the event’s bigger years.

“I’ve been doing this for the last 14 years, Thomas said. “If we hit 500, we did really good. If we go toward 525 or 540, we’re maxed out.

“We’re very appreciative of what the community does, added Peter Hage, the club’s president. “Events like this allow us to make the club [house] available to the two or three dozen organizations that use the property, and we try to make it available to them free of charge.

With raffles, music, good food and company, there was little reason for anyone not to be excited over how the evening turned out. And cleaning up was a little easier, thanks to the volunteer efforts of the local Boy Scouts, who work closely with the Lions Club and use their pavilion to hold meetings.

“This is fantastic, said Hage. “For the last hour-and-a-half, the serving line has been working non-stop!

KENT – The cold temperatures and biting winds didn’t deter a crowd from gathering for the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Standing in front of the memorials honoring local residents who served in the military, First Selectman Martin Lindenmayer, himself a veteran, said the day is “not only a time to remember history, but to recognize the people among us—neighbors, friends and family—who have served with courage, sacrifice and devotion. Whether they stood guard in distant lands or supported their comrades from home, their service has preserved the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
