John Anthony Bruno

MILLERTON — John Anthony Bruno, 89, a 22-year resident of Millerton and formerly of New Hyde Park, N.Y., died Dec. 11, 2015, at his home in Millerton. 

Mr. Bruno worked as an oil burner technician for Petro Fuel Oil in Queens, N.Y., for 45 years prior to his retirement.

Born Nov. 14, 1926, in Corona, N.Y., he was the son of the late Columbia (Blasucci) and Andrew Bruno. 

Mr. Bruno was a graduate of Forest Hills High School and served his country honorably in the United States Army. 

On Feb. 16, 1952, in East Elmhurst, N.Y., he married Vilma Bernardon, his wife of 63 years. Mrs. Bruno survives at home.

Mr. Bruno was an avid reader and enjoyed attending his grandson’s baseball games. He also enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Bears.

In addition to his wife, Vilma, Mr. Bruno is survived by his three children, John Bruno and his wife, Robin, of Livingston, N.Y., William Bruno of Massapequa, N.Y., and Lisa Napolitano and her husband, Joseph, of Millerton; eight grandchildren, Christa, Erin, Bethann, Johnny, Joe, Vicky, Gina and Joey; four great-grandchildren, Lilly, Emma, Rosie and Jake; and a nephew, Andrew Bruno. 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Anthony and Emma Bruno; and his daughter-in-law, Maddie Bruno.

Arrangements are under the care of the Scott D. Conklin Funeral Home in Millerton. Funeral services were held Dec. 15 at the funeral home, the Rev. William Mayhew officiating. Burial was at Irondale Cemetery in Millerton.

CORNWALL — Clyde Perham Weed, 74, passed away peacefully at his home in West Cornwall, Connecticut on Sunday, August 17.

Clyde was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Jeanne and Herbert Weed. He was the grandson and namesake of Clyde E. Weed, Chairman of the board of Anaconda Copper.

Backgammon series begins at Hotchkiss Library of Sharon

In light of rising local interest in the centuries-old game of Backgammon, Wednesday afternoon backgammon instruction and play sessions are being offered at The Hotchkiss Library of Sharon. The first such session was held on Wednesday, Aug. 13, attracting two enthusiastic participants, both of whom resolved to return for the weekly sessions.

Expert player and instructor Roger Lourie of Sharon, along with his equally expert wife, Claude, led the session, jumping right into the action of playing the game. Claude chose to pair with Janet Kaufman of Salisbury, a moderately experienced player looking to improve her skills, while Lourie teamed himself with Pam Jarvis of Sharon, who was new to the game.
