MCSD facilities project update

MILLBROOK — Millbrook Central School District’s facilities project is underway. The community approved the completion of the capital project, which includes roof replacement at Elm Drive Elementary and Alden Place Elementary, heating upgrades at Alden Place and Millbrook Middle School, electrical upgrades at Millbrook Middle School and a complete overhaul of the athletic field complex, according to Brian Fried, the district’s business administrator. “With the promise of greater energy efficiency and no new leaks inside our buildings, we are excited to report that the roofs of Alden and Elm are now complete,” Fried said. The Board of Education (BOE) accepted bids for the replacement of the older boilers at Alden Place, and work started on Sept. 20. The boiler replacement required asbestos abatement to safely remove the boiler. The perimeter where the work was taking place was taped off and asbestos removed after school hours. Fried said they had both construction management and asbestos monitoring personnel at Alden Place to make sure the proper procedures for safe removal were followed.“The asbestos-related portion of the project of the Alden Place boiler replacement should be done this week,” Fried said. “Everything went really well; we are just slightly ahead of schedule but there were no complications at all.”The next step is the actual replacement of the boiler at Alden Place. Elm Drive is completely finished with the roof replacement. Fried said they are currently in a holding pattern for the boiler, waiting on different parts to be delivered. However, that part of the project should be done in the middle of November. Following the boiler replacement the remainder of the facilities work will be at the middle school, Alden Place and then the athletic fields.“We are not going to start the fields until March or April, depending on how hefty a winter we have and that will be the biggest determining factor,” Fried said.
