Mini-golf course opens

CANTON — At Matterhorn Mini-Golf, located on Route 44 on the Albany Turnpike, it’s all about Switzerland.

The 18-hole course opened last week, offering a unique theme and feel for mini-golf enthusiasts, with a little educational value thrown in.

The course and its theme are the vision of Autumn Sutherland. From the rustic wood-built lounge and foyer to the old fashion Swiss advertisements leading to the course to the design of every hole, Matterhorn reflects a love of everything Swiss.

“Pirate ships, they’ve been done,” Sutherland said. “I wanted a theme and a place that would be a real destination, somewhere where you would want to spend 120 hours a week.”

Sutherland began work on the course in January of this year, purchasing a long-vacant property on Route 44 that had once been a small flea market.

Her vision and inspiration came from a long love affair with Switzerland, she said, beginning with backpacking through the country as a teenager.

“The course is based on real places from Switzerland,” Sutherland said.

Locations represented on the course include Lauterbrunnen Falls, a hole where golfers are encouraged to knock their ball into a running stream to reach the hole; “Atom Blaster” which pays tribute to the Large Hadron Collider located in Geneva; “Roger That,” a hole with tennis racket obstacles dedicated to Swiss tennis star Roger Federer; and, of course, The Matterhorn.

Meticulous detail went into every aspect of the course, Sutherland said, including real corn planted alongside a hole dedicated to Swiss farms and ridges caused by the wake of a boat providing a subtle obstacle on a lake-themed hole.

Sutherland described the par 45 course as “serious,” and “challenging” as far as golfing goes, referencing European professional mini-golfers and courses. However, a section has been partitioned to be handicapped accessible). But if you are ever getting frustrated, she said it can’t hurt to learn a little more about Switzerland.

“You don’t force people, but I like to provide educational opportunities,” Sutherland said.

Spaced around the course are plaques with a variety of historical and cultural facts pertaining to Switzerland, from the legend of William Tell to the number of Swiss cheese variations in existence.

Working as a governess for 18 years, Sutherland said she still enjoys providing these kinds of opportunities. She also said that the Switzerland Tourism Board would be sending a representative to see the course sometime this month.

Matterhorn Mini-Golf is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information go to www.matterhornminigolf.com.
