Mountaineer Week in Review

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Mountaineers started the fall season after a rough preseason due to weather. 

On Friday, Sept. 7, volleyball opened at home under the direction of new coaches Megan Williams (Varsity) and Rob Nellson (JV). The Varsity lost a hard-fought match to Lewis Mills, 3-0 (13-25; 25-27; 11-25). Madelynn Olownia and Jillian Diamond had two aces each. The JV team also lost to Lewis Mills, 2-0. 

The girls soccer team opened on the road against Northwestern. The Varsity team under the direction of Steve Dodge won, 4-0. Genevieve Bushey, Aliza Luminati, Neve O’Connell and Sydney Segalla each contributed one goal. In the goal, MacKenzie Hunter had one save and Maggie Bickford had two. Under direction of Coach Kaleigh Rogers, the JV team lost to Northwestern, 2-1. Abigail Coolbeth scored the lone goal on a pass from Kaylie Anderson. Goalie Emma Walsh saved 15 shots. 

The boys soccer team opened the season at home against Northwestern on Saturday, Sept. 8. The JV team, coached by Bill Gold, lost 5-0. Jacob Sheltra had five saves in goal. The Varsity team, coached by Jim Terrall, lost, 3-1. Sebastian Munoz Arango scored the lone goal, with an assist from Matt Lopes. Jack McAuliffe had eight saves as goal keeper. 

The co-op football team of Oliver Wolcott Technical High School, Housatonic and Wamogo, known as MCW United, opened the season against Wilcox Tech. After leading at half time, MCW United lost, 34-8. 

Chris Speaker (OWTS) scored the MCW United touchdown. Nick Guida (OWTS) contributed with the two-point conversion. Alex Sherman (OWTS) had a fumble recovery. Max Dodge (Housatonic) rushed 23 carries for 90 yards. Josh Barber (Wamogo) rushed 18 carries for 74 yards.

Due to weather, the cross-country meet was rescheduled.

BRISTOL — The Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic co-op football team ended the season with a 34-0 shutout victory over St. Paul Catholic High School Wednesday, Nov. 26.

It was GNH’s fourth consecutive Turkey Bowl win against St. Paul and the final game for 19 GNH seniors.

Students curate Katro Storm portraits at HVRHS

“Once Upon a Time in America” features ten portraits by artist Katro Storm.

The Kearcher-Monsell Gallery at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village is once again host to a wonderful student-curated exhibition. “Once Upon a Time in America,” ten portraits by New Haven artist Katro Storm, opened on Nov. 20 and will run through the end of the year.

“This is our first show of the year,” said senior student Alex Wilbur, the current head intern who oversees the student-run gallery. “I inherited the position last year from Elinor Wolgemuth. It’s been really amazing to take charge and see this through.”

Mini horses, big impact: animal learning center opens in Sheffield

Le Petit Ranch offers animal-assisted therapy and learning programs for children and seniors in Sheffield.

Le Petit Ranch, a nonprofit offering animal-assisted therapy and learning programs, opened in April at 147 Bears Den Road in Sheffield. Founded by Marjorie Borreda, the center provides programs for children, families and seniors using miniature horses, rescued greyhounds, guinea pigs and chickens.

Borreda, who moved to Sheffield with her husband, Mitch Moulton, and their two children to be closer to his family, has transformed her longtime love of animals into her career. She completed certifications in animal-assisted therapy and coaching in 2023, along with coursework in psychiatry, psychology, literacy and veterinary skills.
