Mountainside will now offer detox

NORTH CANAAN — The new CEO of Mountainside, Stephen Benson, has announced that the facility will expand its services to provide medical detoxification for individuals entering into treatment for substance abuse. “With the addition of this medical component, clients are now able to join us in the earliest stages of their recovery and advance seamlessly through each phase of treatment in our continuum of care,” Benson said.The detox facility will be part of a new 52,000 square-foot building that will also include an expanded Family Wellness Center and outpatient services. Mountainside opened 17 years ago, and is a residential and extended-care treatment center for people with addiction to alcohol, opiates and other substances.The center recently re-opened its cafe in Falls Village, where clients can work as they prepare to transition out of the center.In a press release, the center said that, “Mountainside Detox will incorporate evidence-based pharmacological solutions and alternative therapies for complete, whole-person treatment.”There will be 24-hour nursing care, psychiatric services, individual and group counseling, continuing care planning and complementary therapies, including yoga and acupuncture.To learn more about Mountainside’s treatment programs for alcohol and drug abuse, go to www.Mountainside.com.

CORNWALL — Clyde Perham Weed, 74, passed away peacefully at his home in West Cornwall, Connecticut on Sunday, August 17.

Clyde was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Jeanne and Herbert Weed. He was the grandson and namesake of Clyde E. Weed, Chairman of the board of Anaconda Copper.

Backgammon series begins at Hotchkiss Library of Sharon

In light of rising local interest in the centuries-old game of Backgammon, Wednesday afternoon backgammon instruction and play sessions are being offered at The Hotchkiss Library of Sharon. The first such session was held on Wednesday, Aug. 13, attracting two enthusiastic participants, both of whom resolved to return for the weekly sessions.

Expert player and instructor Roger Lourie of Sharon, along with his equally expert wife, Claude, led the session, jumping right into the action of playing the game. Claude chose to pair with Janet Kaufman of Salisbury, a moderately experienced player looking to improve her skills, while Lourie teamed himself with Pam Jarvis of Sharon, who was new to the game.
