Nelson is interim pastor for Salisbury Congregational

SALISBURY — The Congregational Church of Salisbury, UCC, announced last week that the Rev. Dr. John A. Nelson will serve as transitional pastor beginning in April, following the recent retirement of the Rev. Diane Monti-Catania. 

Nelson is currently at the Church on the Hill in Lenox, Mass., as designated-term pastor and teacher. 

He has previously served at the Niantic Community Church in Connecticut and with congregations in Dover, Mass., and Gloversville, N.Y. 

He was ordained in the United Church of Christ in June 1997 at Judson Memorial Church in New York City. 

His wife, Angela Lomanto, is the development director for Volunteers in Medicine Berkshires in Great Barrington. Their daughter, Katie Daniels, is a nurse and lives in Stamford and their other  daughter, Rachel Smith, a news reporter, lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. 

Nelson has devoted himself to working for economic justice and promoting peaceful solutions to poverty and abuse, as well as interfaith ministries. 

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., he is a graduate of Middlebury College and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He earned the Doctor of Ministry in Preaching from Chicago Theological Seminary in 2011.

He has worked as a carpenter, a typesetter and a chaplain in a program serving persons infected with HIV. 

Until his arrival in April, the following clergy will be at the church:

March 3, Rev. Kirk Hall, chaplain, Salisbury School 

March 10, Robert Kuhn with deacons

March 17, Bryan Nurnberger, president and founder of Simply Smiles, with the deacons

March 24, the Rev. James deBoer, NYU law student and son of Sophia and Lee deBoer of Salisbury

March 31, Jason Larson, chaplain at The Hotchkiss School.

From research to recognition: Student project honors pioneering Black landowner

Cornwall Consolidated School seventh graders Skylar Brown, Izabella Coppola, Halley Villa, Willow Berry, Claire Barbosa, Willa Lesch, Vivianne DiRocco and Franco Aburto presented a group research project on the life of Naomi Freeman Wednesday, April 23. In attendance were U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-Conn., John Mills, president of Alex Breanne Corporation, Cornwall First Selectman Gordon Ridgway, Cornwall Selectman Jennifer Markow and CCS social studies teacher Will Vincent.

CORNWALL — “In Cornwall you have made the decision that everyone here matters and everyone’s story is important,” said U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-Waterbury, to the seventh grade class at Cornwall Consolidated School April 23.

Hayes was in attendance to celebrate history on Wednesday as the CCS students presented their group research project on the life of Naomi Cain Freeman, the first Black female landowner in Cornwall.
