New curator for Sharon Town Hall art gallery

SHARON — “The Lakeville Journal works!â€ exhulted Town Hall art gallery curator Harry Rubicam.  Former curator, that is. Rubicam was interviewed in The Journal two months ago, and said he was hoping to find someone to step into his shoes as the volunteer director of the “galleryâ€ in the town offices.

Thanks to that article, he said, Sharon resident Beri Greenwald has stepped in to take his place.

“She saw the article and stepped forward, Rubicam said. “I’m not sure what drives people to volunteer, but I feel very good that someone has stepped forward in this case.

Greenwald, who has lived in Sharon for more than 30 years, is a graphic artist who said she has knowledge of the art scene in the area.

“Art, to me, is not separate from life, Greenwald wrote in an e-mail to The Journal. “The gallery at Town Hall gives both the artist and the public an opportunity to be connected through the creativity of the artist. Art is one way in which we humans express ourselves. It is a form of communication that is universal.

This month, Falls Village artist John Pirnak has had his work on display at the gallery. In March, students from Sharon Center School will have their works on the spacious white walls.

“In August, we plan to have an environmental art show which will tie in with Sharon Audubon,â€ Rubicam said.

Greenwald said she is looking forward to working with Rubicam at the art gallery.

“We thank Town Hall for giving the community this space, Greenwald said. “We encourage people to come out every month to see it.

Judge throws out zoning challenge tied to Wake Robin Inn expansion

A judge recently dismissed one lawsuit tied to the proposed redevelopment, but a separate court appeal of the project’s approval is still pending.

LAKEVILLE — A Connecticut Superior Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed against Salisbury’s Planning and Zoning Commission challenging a zoning amendment tied to the controversial expansion of the Wake Robin Inn.

The case focused on a 2024 zoning regulation adopted by the P&Z that allows hotel development in the Rural Residential 1 zone, where the historic Wake Robin Inn is located. That amendment provided the legal basis for the commission’s approval of the project in October 2025; had the lawsuit succeeded, the redevelopment would have been halted.

A winter visit to Olana

Olana State Historic Site, the hilltop home created by 19th-century Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church, rises above the Hudson River on a clear winter afternoon.

By Brian Gersten

On a recent mid-January afternoon, with the clouds parted and the snow momentarily cleared, I pointed my car northwest toward Hudson with a simple goal: to get out of the house and see something beautiful.

My destination was the Olana State Historic Site, the hilltop home of 19th-century landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church. What I found there was not just a welcome winter outing, but a reminder that beauty — expansive, restorative beauty — does not hibernate.
