No news and good news

SHARON — No arrests have been made yet in the June 12 break-in at Sharon Pharmacy, when an 800-pound safe holding approximately $70,000 worth of narcotics was stolen in the middle of the night, during the power outage.

State Trooper Mark Puzzo, the investigating officer on the case, was not available to comment this week (he works the midnight shift).

Lt. Scott Anderson, who is the commanding officer at the State Police Troop B barracks in North Canaan, said that he does not know if there are any suspects yet. However, he said, the safe has been found. It was dumped into a swampy area on West Woods Road #1 in Sharon and recovered by the police a few days after the theft.

“It looked like some kind of torch was used to open it, Lt. Anderson reported. “We are running fingerprints and will do what we can forensically to get some type of information off it.

The lieutenant said he believes that there have been leads from people in town and that the police are now looking for evidence strong enough to make an arrest.

The thieves entered the pharmacy by crashing through the plate-glass window near the pharmacy section of the shop, owned by the Heacox family of Sharon. The counter and assorted papers were tossed out the window and onto the sidewalk during the break-in.  Last week, the window was bricked up and will be painted to match the surrounding walls at the shopping plaza.

There was happier news  next door at the Country Corner restaurant, which has been closed now for several months. Owners Bennie Rivera and John Liggio proudly gave a tour of the completely renovated interior on Saturday morning. The kitchen has been enlarged and has all new equipment. Two new bathrooms have been added. A stone tile floor has been laid.

The partners expect to be preparing meals for themselves and their workmen as early as next week. Then they’ll begin to fine tune the menu in anticipation of their opening, possibly at the end of July.

At Sharon’s other eateries (the former Brick House Pizzeria and Pappardelle’s restaurant, both on West Main Street), dumpsters are in evidence but there is no word yet on when they will reopen and what type of food they will serve.
