After a decade of dueling Dems, Rubicam steps down

SHARON — After 10 years of service, Cindy Rubicam has stepped down as Republican Town Committee Chairman.

“I enjoyed my role as chairman; I had the opportunity to meet lots of wonderful people, not only in Sharon but throughout the state, Rubicam said in an interview with the Journal. “I am happy now to turn the chairmanship over to Jeffrey Johnston. It was time for a change; 10 years was enough for me I am happy now to just be a member of the committee. It is time now for somebody new and younger to assume the role.

Rubicam said she was happy with the decision to appoint Johnston the new chairman.

“Jeff will do a great job. He has been very active on the town committee since he joined, Rubicam said. “He has always been willing to take on any challenge that has come his way; he will be a great chairman.

Johnston has been on the committee for three years and has served as treasurer for the Republican Town Committee, as well as for the 30th Senatorial District Republicans.

Locally, Johnston owns Johnston Custom Building and is a member of the Sharon Zoning Board of Appeals and the Conservation Commission, and is the Zoning Board of Appeals representative to the Inlands Wetlands and Watercourses Commission. He is also a horse show announcer who serves as an official in his spare time.

The decision to appoint Johnston to chairman came easily and was universally agreed upon by the committee members, according to Chairman of the Nominating Committee Rosellen Schnurr.

“We knew that Cindy wanted to retire from her position as chairman and everyone agreed that Jeff should be chairman, Schnurr said. “We have a very cohesive group and we are very excited about the people we have got.

To Johnston, the appointment came as quite a compliment.

“It is an honor, he said. “I have some very big shoes to fill being that Cindy did an outstanding job for the last 10 years. It is almost kind of intimidating. We have our work cut out for us being that there are now more Democrats in Sharon than Republicans for the first time since the Civil War. However, we still have faith and we are going to move forward.

“There are many challenges facing Sharon, Johnston said. “Zoning is undergoing radical changes and we need a new transfer station. We feel that the Republicans are better qualified to lead the town. We are going to work hard to bring the town quality candidates to elect to office.

Indigo girls: a collaboration in process and pigment
Artist Christy Gast

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
