Intermediate program criticized by Webutuck BOE

WEBUTUCK — The North East (Webutuck) Central School District Board of Education (BOE) met on Monday, Feb. 13, to approve tenure for two teachers and discuss the future of the current fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade programs. The board acknowledged and welcomed speech and language teacher Christine Henderson and secondary biology teacher Michelle Nowak.“It’s not really a welcome since they’ve been with us already, but [more of a] congratulations and we’re happy to have them joining us for what we hope is a long time,” said board member Judy Moran. The board then began a discussion regarding changes to the fourth- through sixth-grade program, which was listed on the agenda under curriculum and instruction.“What we were sold last year and the direction it’s currently going are two very different things,” BOE President Dale Culver said.Talks have begun about the inadequacies of the current program, and the need to either adjust it or possibly adopt an older model.Board member Kristen Panzer was uneasy about using a prior model.“I just don’t feel like we’d be making progress by going backwards,” she said.Moran assured Panzer and the board the changes wouldn’t be a step back.“Saying ‘an older model’ is just semantics. What we want to do is see why this isn’t working now and possibly find things that did work before and use those,” she said.Board member Joanne Boyd was determined to keep the discussion productive and to discuss many ideas.“We want to see what has worked, what doesn’t, and continue to evolve our program to provide students with the best experience,” she said.Panzer remained uneasy.“I just feel like we sold the public this idea last year and we’re not sticking it out. It’s a big adjustment for parents to change the program and to say ‘well, we messed up,’ and have to start a new program again is daunting,” she said.Culver said that while the program doesn’t work, it’s not at the fault of the board.“What we were told last year was that all the work had been done to make sure this program would be implemented properly. The work hadn’t been done. We were sold an idea, a lot of vague explanations, and now we see that it’s just not what we thought. It’s our responsibility to make the changes needed and fix this,” he said.Boyd also pointed out that these talks are in the early stages and no previous models or courses of action have been agreed upon as of yet.Superintendent James Gratto pointed out that part of the discussion is improving how the staff is used.“We want to make sure that we maximize our staff and we’re looking into many ways on how to do that,” he said.Discussions will continue before any plans are brought to the board for a vote.“We have a whole wing of this school that’s a failed experiment right now,” Culver added. “That’s just not acceptable.”

Indigo girls: a collaboration in process and pigment
Artist Christy Gast

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
