Norfolk Library holds summer reading program kickoff

NORFOLK — A Summer Reading kickoff event was held at the Norfolk Library on Monday, June 30.“Fizz Boom Read” is the national summer reading theme this year as organized by the national Collaborative Summer Library Program. As part of the national program, the kickoff event was all about “Slimy Science” and featured a magician from Mad Science of Western New England with the program coordinated by Eileen Fitzgibbons, children’s librarian at the library. From the glimmer of excitement in the children’s eyes to the smiles of the parents, one could tell that everyone enjoyed the event.Fitzgibbons has been with the children’s program since it started and was originally a volunteer who was very active in the library. The program is eight weeks in length and, according to Fitzgibbons, usually has about 40 participants. “Our mission is to be a place where every person, no matter what their age, can come and feel welcome,” Fitzgibbons said. “Different libraries express themselves through this theme. Since it is ‘Fizz Boom Read,’ I decided to focus on science this summer with a pinch of art.”The event included science related displays, books, biographies on scientists and experiments.“This might entice someone to look at science in another way,” Fitzgibbons said. There will be other events to be held in conjunction with the summer reading program at the library including: “Bubblemania, illusions with bubbles”on Monday, July 7, at 6 p.m. and “Wizard’s Lab” featuring the Connecticut Children’s Museum on Monday, July 14, at 6 p.m.“We try to have programs that are interesting for people of all ages,” Fitzgibbons said. “Everyone comes away saying that was fun. I think that it is important too that everyone can learn no matter what age they are. Once you come to the library, maybe dad would take out a book or grandma will take out something, so I think it is a good message. I think the library is really important because you have kids, parents, grandparents, mothers, fathers, toddlers, older kids, even teenagers, they are all sitting underneath a beautiful tree learning about science. It’s a meeting place, somewhere safe, a place where their lives will be enriched, so they will be connected to the town.”The Norfolk Library is located at 9 Greenwoods Road East. For more information call 860-542-5075 or visit the library’s website at www.norfolklibrary.org.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.
