For now, no more varsity football for HVRHS

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School athletic department has announced that the football program will play a junior varsity schedule only for the upcoming 2014 season. Previously, the team had competed at a varsity level in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference and the Pequot League. The move is only temporary; the school will evaluate whether to move back to a varsity schedule in the spring of 2015. Housatonic has a relatively small student population and in recent years has had a co-op team with Wamogo High School. But the number of players on the team has still shrunk to the point where the team was forced to forfeit five of its 11 games in the 2013 season. Facing the same turnout for the upcoming season, Housatonic Athletic Director Anne Macneil and school officials were faced with the need to make a change. “My ultimate goal is to strengthen the program and keep it alive,” said Macneil. “I look at this decision as a way to keep the program going and rebuild.”The team will play an eight to 11 game schedule in 2014 against other JV teams from schools in the Pequot league, as well as potentially some of the private schools in the area. Macneil is looking at other schools to potentially partner up, as has been done with Wamogo, but nothing is official yet. Unfortunately, the move does mean the end (for now) to the traditional Thanksgiving game against The Gilbert School. However, Macneil is looking into potentially putting together a matchup between the two schools in the week preceding the holiday. There will be an informational meeting for all parents and players on Monday, March 31, at the high school at 6 p.m.
