WINSTED — Upon hearing that the fountain in East End Park is not water-tight, the Winchester Board of Selectmen directed Town Manager Keith Robbins to shut the fountain off until it can be repaired. Selectman David Cappabianca said the town shouldn’t be wasting water during lean fiscal years.
“I notice the fountain is running, Cappabianca said. “I don’t know how everybody else feels about this, but I think we ought to shut it off. If we’re just running it into the storm drain system, we’re running treated water that we pay to treat into the drainage system. It doesn’t make any sense to me.
Robbins told selectmen that there are some Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) funds still available for upgrades at East End Park that may be applicable to repair of the fountain. In the meantime, he said, the fountain would be shut off by the water department, but may be turned back on for special events in the park.
