Pearson award winners show leadership potential

WINSTED — Eighth-grade students Olivia Ortman and Jacob Schoenberger have been described by Pearson Middle School teachers as high achievers who have excelled in academic success.

This is one of the reasons why both 13-year-old students have been named the school’s 2010 Superintendent Award winners by the Litchfield County Superintendents’ Association.

Olivia was recognized with the award not just because of her academic excellence, but also because of her citizenship and leadership potential.

She plays clarinet in the school band, is a member of PEERS and participates in the school’s art club.

Her parents are Melissa and Edward Ortman.

“I think Pearson is really a good school, Olivia said. “My favorite class is history because I like to learn about different time periods. I hope I can be a book publisher or an architect in the future because I like books and buildings.

Jacob has been described by teachers as a student who puts his academics first.

He plays soccer on the school’s team and has played in state and national competitions.

He is also an accomplished wrestler who has competed in state and national wrestling matches.

His parents are Jeannie and Todd Schoenberger.

“It’s really good to get this award, Jacob said. “I love history and math, because they are the ones that come the easiest to me. I hope I can be a professional soccer player or a chef when I grow up.
