Rain spoiled some events

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Mountaineers’ week opened with the JV squad of the MCW United Football team losing to the co-op team of Vinal/Goodwin/Whitney 38-0 on Sept. 24.

Once again, Mother Nature stepped in and played a huge role in this week’s athletic events.  The boys and girls soccer games against Gilbert and the cross-country meet against Litchfield and Terryville scheduled for Sept. 25 were postponed due to rain.

The JV and Varsity Volleyball team won their first games of the season against Gilbert. JV won 2-1. Varsity won 3-2. Madelynn Olownia had eight aces and five assists. Jillian Diamond had three aces and eight kills. Molly O’Connor had four aces.

Cross-country made up their meet versus Litchfield and Terryville on Sept. 26. The boys lost to both teams. The girls won against both with Brooke Stampfle coming in second; Sammantha Starr finished fourth followed by Natalie Nestler in fifth and Avery Tripp in sixth.  Sarah Upson completed the line-up for Housatonic by finishing ninth.

Due to poor field conditions, the girls soccer games at Lewis Mills scheduled for Sept. 28 were postponed.

The field hockey team won their first game of the season at home versus Shepaug. Molly Menniges scored both goals for the Lady Mountaineers. Annabelle Kovacs recorded five saves.

Volleyball faced out-of-league opponent Dover. Varsity lost 4-1.

MCW United Football traveled to Norwich to face Thames River. After coming into the second half tied 0-0, the Varsity team lost 20-6. Cade Gwinn (OWTS) scored the touchdown on a pass from Chris Speaker (OWTS).

Bears headline DEEP forum in Sharon; attendees call for coexistence, not hunting

A mother bear and her cubs move through a backyard in northwest Connecticut, where residents told DEEP that bear litters are now appearing more frequently.

By James H. Clark

SHARON — About 40 people filled the Sharon Audubon Center on Wednesday, Dec. 3, to discuss black bears — and most attendees made clear that they welcome the animals’ presence. Even as they traded practical advice on how to keep bears out of garages, porches and trash cans, residents repeatedly emphasized that they want the bears to stay and that the real problem lies with people, not wildlife.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) convened the meeting as the first in a series of regional Bear Management Listening Sessions, held at a time when Connecticut is increasingly divided over whether the state should authorize a limited bear hunt. Anticipating the potential for heated exchanges, DEEP opened the evening with strict ground rules designed to prevent confrontations: speakers were limited to three minutes, directed to address only the panel of DEEP officials, and warned that interruptions or personal attacks would not be tolerated.
