Ribbon cutting at Sharon Hospital marks change and progress

SHARON — The ribbon cutting at Sharon Hospital Tuesday afternoon marked the end of a year of renovation, expanding the radiology department and opening the new birthing center and emergency department.

"[The expansion] will enhance our ability to treat patients," Sharon Hospital President and CEO Charles Therrien said during a speech in front of the new maternity ward.

"We can better deliver the right resources to the right people at the right time."

Therrien helped to cut the ribbon along with several members of the hospital administration and medical staff, in addition to Sharon First Selectman Malcolm Brown, State Rep. Roberta Willis (D-64) and State Sen. Andrew Roraback (R-30).

The ribbon cutting was followed by a picnic barbecue and tours of the new facility. The renovations continue with the second phase of emergency-room construction breaking ground next week; and the first floor of the maternity ward is still what Therrien calls "shell space."

Guides gave tours of the new expansion as a guitarist entertained the crowd gathered in the hospital parking lot.

The radiology department will house the MRI machine, which used to be in a trailer outside the hospital.

The maternity ward, on the second floor of the addition, overlooks Sharon’s rolling hills and is now closer to the hospital’s emergency department.

The project comes shortly after the fifth anniversary of Essent Health Care’s purchase of the hospital when it was in financial trouble.

"I came here seven years ago and was told the hospital was on life support," Roraback said. "Now it’s as fit as a fiddle, ready to run a marathon."

In the coming months the existing emergency department will be gutted and rebuilt. Construction, Therrien says he hopes, will conclude in the fall.

The first reading featured an excerpt from King’s final book, “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?” including the oft-quoted passage: "Returning violence for violence multiples violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
