Sarah Remling named valedictorian

MILLBROOK — Sarah Remling possesses an outstanding resume at Millbrook High School. Taking advanced placement (AP) and college courses, Sarah was consistently first in her class throughout her high school years.

She has been awarded the Conklin Scholarship at Dutchess Community College, which is a full scholarship for her education there. The scholarship is given to Dutchess County students who are in the top 10 percent of their class.

Remling also kept busy with numerous clubs and activities. She was a member of the CAT Club, the yearbook committee, and the environment committee. She is a member of the Interact Club, the Honor Society, and worked on the stage crew of the high school production of “Shrek: the Musical,” which was produced this spring at the high school to rave reviews.

Remling said her favorite subjects were art, biology and math. Looking forward, she sees herself in the field of bio-engineering. She feels that she can use her love of art, her mathematical abilities and the expertise she hopes to develop in bio-engineering to work toward making prosthetics for veterans and others who have lost limbs to accident, war or illness.

Baby sitting provided Remling with spending money and gave her a chance to save for the future. She attended the senior trip to Disney World in Florida and said it was awesome. Her first flight was scary at first, but by the return trip she was comfortable with the process.

Remling credits the Summer Reading Program at the Millbrook Library with her love of reading and studying. She also praised the school system in Millbrook and the community in general.

“Millbrook has such a good arts program,” she said, “and the school and community, while small, are close-knit, where everyone comes together to furnish care and support for each other.”

Asked if she was nervous about her speech as valedictorian, she said, “I’m just a little nervous. But Principal Caroline Hernadez-Pidala and English teacher Frank Fiorenza will be looking it over.”

Remling plans to practice her delivery on friends and family. Judging by her track record at Millbrook High School, her speech should be just fine.
