School enrollments mostly lower 2019-2020

FALLS VILLAGE — The numbers of students in the seven schools of the Region One School District for the 2019-20 school year were calculated as of Oct. 1.

The numbers are mostly lower this year than last year, although the numbers increase and decline slightly every year at all the schools.

There are some schools where enrollment has increased this year.

Cornwall’s elementary school, for example,  has 78 students this year, and had 73 last year (although it had 83 two years ago).

The official tally of student enrollment is made on Oct. 1 each year. The number of students this year will be used to calculate the budgets for the next fiscal year, which will begin July 1, 2020.

The six towns in the district share Housatonic Valley Regional High School. Each town has its own budget and board of education; the six towns share regional costs and the cost of the high school.

The numbers this year are:

Lee H. Kellogg School (Falls Village): 70

Cornwall Consolidated School: 78

Kent Center School:  192

North Canaan Elementary School:  249

Salisbury Central School:  276

Sharon Center School: 103

Housatonic Valley Regional High School: 348

These numbers reflect resident students. They do not include the handful of out-of-district tuition students at the high school and some of the elementary schools.

These figures are used for calculating the assessments paid by the six Region One towns for the following year’s budget. That is, the 2019-20 enrollment determines the assessments for the 2020-21 fiscal year.

The enrollment for the  2018-19 fiscal year:

Lee H. Kellogg School: 73

Cornwall Consolidated School: 73

Kent Center School: 223

North Canaan Elementary School: 277

Salisbury Central: 298

Sharon Center:133

Housatonic Valley Regional High School: 364

The year before that, in 2017-18, enrollment was:

Lee H. Kellogg School: 66

Cornwall Consolidated School: 83

Kent Center School: 213

North Canaan Elementary School: 253

Salisbury Central: 287

Sharon Center: 115

Housatonic Valley Regional High School: 368
