Sharon Center School boys, Salisbury Central School girls win Region One basketball tourney

FALLS VILLAGE — They’re smaller than basketball’s most famous pros, but boys from Sharon Center and girls on the Salisbury Central School basketball teams were standing tall on Feb. 26 as they won their regional tournaments.

More than 200 people attended the finals last Thursday at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. Fans rooted, cheered and often yelled and screamed. It was as if the game was an actual NBA competition.

In the first game of the evening, the Sharon boys team, which went into the game with an undefeated record, went up against the boys from North Canaan.

Before play began, the coaches from the opposing teams revealed their strategies to The Lakeville Journal.

“Our goal is to score a lot more points than the other team, North Canaan head coach Mike Perry confided.

Across the hallway and outside of the school gym, Sharon head coach Steve Muthig said his team’s strategy was pretty much the same.

“Our strategy is to score more points than the other team, Muthig said.

In any case, it was a certainty that one team’s strategy would outpower the other team’s strategy, and it did.

Sharon dominated North Canaan by a score of 52-37, winning the Region One tournament and achieving a perfect season.

“Basically, we utilized our size and our athleticism, Muthig said after the game. “Our full-court press was our bread and butter this season. A lot of teams couldn’t handle our press. Also, they were monsters on the boards and they scored a lot of hard inside baskets. I’m very proud of my guys.

Afterward, the girls teams took to the court, with Team Salisbury duking it out against Cornwall. The game was a nail biter from the beginning to the end, with Salisbury finally overtaking Cornwall by 22-18.

“Toward the very end of the game, our boys’ assistant coach yelled from the crowd, ‘Hey coach, where’s your man-to-man pressure?’ — and that’s what sealed the deal for us, Salisbury coach Anthony O’Niel said after the game. “The girls team this year was a pleasure to be a part of. This was a very dedicated squad of nine girls that worked hard from the very beginning until the end. At the last practice before the tournament, one of the captains told me ‘Coach, we don’t want this season to end.’

O’Niel said he is proud of his team.

“I just want to say to Rachel, Anna, Katie, Helen, Rachel, Amelia, Jenny, Alexandra, Dede and to Coach Dowd, nice season, O’Niel said. “It was my pleasure to coach such a determined group of young girls. You are all truly an inspiration.
