Songs and laughter: Nancy Tucker provides them both

SHARON — Guitarist and comedienne Nancy Tucker delighted the audience during a performance on the lawn of the Hotchkiss Library of Sharon on Friday, June 17. Ideal for the families that came out to see the show, Tucker’s set included songs (both with and without vocals) written by her, strung together with dry but squeaky clean humor.

Tucker’s voice came through smooth and even, which helped in the delivery of her numerous jokes and clever puns. Beginning with a call-and-response song, she immediately drew her audience of adults and children alike into the show.

Interaction with the audience played an important part in many of the songs, but no less noticeable were the unique and creative ways in which Tucker changed her playing and altered her sound. As she strummed, then tapped the frame  and finally slapped and drummed on the guitar strings, the one instrument seemed to become many.

Drawing inspiration from a number of unexpected places, Tucker shared songs about everything from washing machines to jellyfish and much more. Appealing to the political climate of the season, she raised a few eyebrows when she announced she would be singing a protest song — against watermelon, her least favorite of the summer fruits. A real romp for all in attendance, the audience, which clapped, called and followed along with every song, continued to grow as the show went on.

In addition to Tucker’s musical talents, the library treated the audience to a  dessert of chocolate cupcakes from the Blackberry River Baking Company in North Canaan.
