Special town meeting Feb. 22

SHARON — There will be a special town meeting at Town Hall on Friday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. The annual town report will be presented and town residents will be asked to approve it. Voters will also be asked to amend the Land Use Application Fee ordinance; and to approve a lease renewal for 67 Main St. (now leased to radio station WHDD-FM and AM, www.robinhoodradio.com).At the selectmen’s meeting Feb. 5, Jessica Fowler, chairman of Sharon’s Long-Range Planning Committee, reported that the town’s auditors have suggested the town should pay off the mortgage on 67 Main St. They feel the money being used for monthly payments toward the mortgage and interest could be better used for other purposes.Voters will also be asked Feb. 22 to approve expenditures up to $59,467.74 for the Mitchelltown Road bridge project.First Selectman Robert Loucks reported at the Feb. 5 selectmen’s meeting that fabrication of the necessary concrete components for the bridge repairs would be complete by the end of February. He said the concrete parts need time to cure before they can be installed sometime in March.

Recount confirms Bunce as new First Selectman

NORTH CANAAN — A recount held Monday, Nov. 10, at Town Hall confirmed Democrat Jesse Bunce’s narrow victory over incumbent First Selectman Brian Ohler (R) in one of the tightest races in town history.

“A difference of two votes,” said recount moderator Rosemary Keilty after completing the recanvass, which finalized the tally at 572 votes for Bunce and 570 for Ohler.

KENT – The cold temperatures and biting winds didn’t deter a crowd from gathering for the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Standing in front of the memorials honoring local residents who served in the military, First Selectman Martin Lindenmayer, himself a veteran, said the day is “not only a time to remember history, but to recognize the people among us—neighbors, friends and family—who have served with courage, sacrifice and devotion. Whether they stood guard in distant lands or supported their comrades from home, their service has preserved the freedoms we enjoy each day.”

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School’s girls soccer team is headed to the semifinals of the state tournament.

The Mountaineers are the highest seeded team of the four schools remaining in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Class S playoff bracket.
