Spring vacation kicks off at R & B Sports World

WINSTED — Next week is spring break for Winsted schools and R&B Sports World, a sponsor of The Gilbert School’s Project Graduation 2010, will celebrate with a Spring Vacation Kickoff this Sunday, April 11, from 6 to 10 p.m. The event is open to the public.

The Spring Vacation Kickoff will give community members a chance to get discounted admission at R&B Sports World for mini-golf, go-kart rides and Phazerball games, with ice cream to top it off, all in support of this year’s graduating class.

Every year on graduation night, Project Graduation offers high-school seniors a drug- and alcohol-free celebration, filled with social activities, sports, swimming, music and catered food, with the majority of the senior class participating. Sunday’s fundraiser will offer community members a chance to support the annual program, which keeps seniors safe on one of their most potentially dangerous nights of the year. Project Graduation volunteers are hoping to raise approximately $10,000 to carry out the event.

“This is the 21st year we’ve been hosting this party, said Diane Cook, director of Gilbert’s business affairs office. “The kids have an absolute ball, and they’re exhausted when they get home because the party lasts until about 5 in the morning.

Exact details of Project Graduation are kept under wraps during the school year, and students don’t know where they’ll be going until graduation night, when they head off on buses to a special location for the party. About 80 percent of last year’s graduating class participated in the event.

“We need about $10,000 to run the event, Cook said. “We get all of our money through fundraising and we get a great deal of support from local businesses. Without them, I don’t think we could pull this off.

That said, this Sunday’s event will help volunteers get closer to their fundraising goal.

In the event of rain, the Spring Vacation Kickoff will be rescheduled to Tuesday, April 13, from 6 to 10 p.m.
