Students travel world via Geography Bee questions

SHARON — Sharon Center School (SCS) eighth-grader Scott Dignacco was the winner of the school’s 2012 National Geographic Geography Bee held on Friday, Dec. 21.Part of a national contest sponsored by National Geographic, each school has one winner who then competes in a statewide competition after passing a written exam. The winner of the Connecticut bee will complete in a national finals, hosted by “Jeopardy’s” Alex Trebek. The national winner receives a $25,000 college scholarship.Sixteen students in grades five to eight at SCS participated in the school’s finals. Each of the contestants had won in his or her classroom.School Librarian Judy Gafney posed the questions, all of which had been prepared and provided by National Geographic. After four elimination rounds, the two finalists were Scott and seventh-grader Lauren Murtaugh.In the final round, both students were asked the same three questions. The winner had the most correct answers. Had there been a tie, the contest would have continued to another round. Sample questions from previous National Geographic Bee events include:• Which state is located in New England — Rhode Island or Virginia? (Rhode Island)• Mount Rushmore is located near Rapid City in which state — Idaho or South Dakota? (South Dakota)• In early 2012, unusually cold temperatures swept across Eastern Europe, causing more than 130 deaths in what country that borders Moldova and Belarus? (Ukraine).

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School’s girls soccer team is headed to the semifinals of the state tournament.

The Mountaineers are the highest seeded team of the four schools remaining in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Class S playoff bracket.
