NORTH CANAAN — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously this week to support a proposed change to the way the superintendent of schools is paid (see story, Page A10).
Currently, shared services such as the required superintendent are assessed to the six Region One towns and Housatonic Valley Regional High School based on student enrollment.
The Region One Board of Education and All Board Chairs Committee are looking to change policy to evenly split the cost seven ways, reasoning that every school gets the same services. It would mean each school would pay $26,000 next year.
Superintendent Patricia Chamberlain also supports the move, telling local school boards the work she does for each is as equal as possible. The change would only apply to that position, as statute dictates the formulas for assessments of other shared services.
What it means for towns is larger ones will see a savings if the change is made. Smaller towns will see an increase. All towns are reportedly not completely on board with the idea.
North Canaan’s school board is very receptive to the idea, especially since the town would save $13,902.
