Town clerk’s plea: Register your dog!

CORNWALL — One of the best ways to keep a beloved pet dog is to make sure it is licensed, and wears the tag on its collar. It’s a quick and easy way to identify a lost dog. It also proves the dog’s rabies vaccine is up to date, which can save its life in certain situations.Dealing with delinquent dog owners can be a frustrating part of a town clerk’s job. At Cornwall Town Hall, a list of 22 owners of 35 dogs is posted for all to see. It is part of a last-ditch effort to get people to comply with the law.All dogs ages six months and older need to be licensed. New registrations and renewals are due each June. For the animals’ sake, Town Clerk Vera Dinneen recommends not waiting until June to register a dog that has been acquired in the meantime, or to register a puppy that hit the milestone before mid-summer. Owners will still have to pay the full license fee and renew in June, but it could be worth it.Fees are $8 for spayed or neutered dogs and $19 for others. There is a $1-per-month late fee. Some people on the list have accumulated late fees of more than $100.Licensing can be done by mail, with only a current rabies certificate, spay/neuter information if applicable and payment needed. There is no need to make copies. Dinneen will even mail back original certificates along with the license tag, trying to make it as easy as possible. A portion of each collected fee ($2 for spayed or neutered dogs and $6 for others) goes to state animal population control programs.
