Town meeting in four minutes flat

GOOD TO KNOW: The next town meeting will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m. at Town Hall. On the agenda: roof repairs.
 
FALLS VILLAGE — In what might be the fastest time in the town’s history, a town meeting approved two requests for expenditures for equipment for the town highway crew on Thursday, Aug. 14.
 
The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. 
 
Selectman Chuck Lewis was elected moderator. Attending were Town Clerk Mary Palmer, Lewis, Selectman Greg Marlowe, Kent Allyn, Hazel McGuire and Mary Petersen.
 
The first item on the agenda, authorizing the town to spend up to $12,000 for a roadside mower, was approved unanimously, as was the second item, authorizing the town to spend up to $73,000 for the purchase of a dump body and plow as part of a new highway truck purchase.
 
Marlowe moved to adjourn at 7:04 p.m.
 
There is another town meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m., at Town Hall. 
 
This time the agenda items are all about roofs — at Lee H. Kellogg School and at Town Hall (108 Main St.).
 
On Aug. 11, First Selectman Pat Mechare presented the Board of Finance with an estimate from architects Jacunski Humes, who have worked on projects at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. The estimate for the roof repair is $250,000.
 
Mechare said the state will reimburse the town for about $100,000 of that amount, but in order to get the reimbursement process moving the finance board must recommend to town meeting the full amount.
 
The Board of Finance voted to take $100,000 from the school’s capital reserve fund and $150,000 from the general fund, with the expectation of the state reimbursement.
 
The other roof in question is the one at Town Hall, which is leaking badly enough that buckets were deployed this past spring.
 
Mechare gave the Board of Finance an estimate of $7,900 to fix the leak; the contractor who wrote the estimate also made some suggestions for insulation and other improvements.
 
To fund this, Mechare suggested two sources: a reserve account for repairs to 108 Main St. (Town Hall) and 107 Main St., and an environmental cleanup account.
 
The former has about $5,000 in it, the latter about $51,000.
 
The board first voted to recommend to town meeting an appropriation of $11,000 from the environmental cleanup line to the 107/108 Main St. repair line. Then the board voted to recommend to town meeting an appropriation of $8,800 from the 107/108 Main St. repair line to cover the Town Hall roof repair and incidental expenses (such as a dumpster).

Crescendo, the Lakeville-based nonprofit specializing in early and rarely performed classical music, will close its 22nd season with a slate of spring concerts featuring international performers, local musicians and works by pioneering composers from the Baroque era to the 20th century.

Christine Gevert, the organization’s artistic director, has gathered international vocal and instrumental talent, blending it with local voices to provide Berkshire audiences with rare musical treats.

In his 1949 seminal work, “A Sand County Almanac,” Aldo Leopold, regarded by many conservationists as the father of wildlife ecology and modern conservation, wrote, “There are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot.” Leopold was a forester, philosopher, conservationist, educator, writer and outdoor enthusiast.

Originally published by Oxford University Press, “A Sand County Almanac” has sold 2 million copies and been translated into 15 languages. On Sunday, March 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Norfolk Library, the public is invited to a community reading of selections from the book followed by a moderated discussion with Steve Dunsky, director of “Green Fire,” an Emmy Award-winning documentary film exploring the origins of Leopold’s “land ethic.” Similar reading events take place each year across the country during “Leopold Week” in early March. Planning for this Litchfield County reading began when the Norfolk Library received a grant from the Aldo Leopold Foundation, which provided copies of “A Sand County Almanac” to distribute during the event.
