Webster Bank robbed

WINSTED — An unknown male robbed the Webster Bank located at 200 New Hartford Road Tuesday, July 15, and quickly flee the scene. It was the first bank robbed in Winsted since the old Fleet Bank on Elm Street was robbed on Sept. 7, 2004.

According to Winsted police, at 3:08 p.m., a man dressed in a white T-shirt, tan pants and a black stocking cap entered the bank located in Ledgebrook Plaza. After jumping over the counter, the suspect ordered an employee to open the cash drawer and grabbed an unknown amount of money. He did not appear to be carrying a weapon and said nothing more during the robbery, according to Police Chief Nicholas Guerriero. At least one customer was in the bank at the time and no one was injured.

The suspect managed to escape on foot into the woods near the bank and may have used an ATV, since tracks were located in the area. Police dogs have been unable pick up a scent of the suspect.

"We’re still busy," said Guerriero. "We are reviewing the tapes of the bank."

The bank remained closed for the afternoon while police interviewed witnesses and dusted for evidence. The parking lot was also closed for about 45 minutes.

The Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Division is assisting the Winsted Police Department in the investigations. The state’s police canine also assisted because it was closer than Winsted’s at the time, said Guerriero.

Police remained on the scene for the better part of the evening and continued to patrol the area on Wednesday.

"There is not a threat to the town. We are still investigating the case and we will release information as it becomes available," said Guerriero.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Winsted Police Department at 860-379-2721.
