Webutuck soccer defeated at home

WEBUTUCK1— With one day left of summer vacation, the Webutuck boys varsity soccer team challenged Dover on the field in a home game on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

By the end of the first half, the score was tied 2-2, and the intensity of the players soon matched the rising afternoon heat. The score changed  the second half of the game when Dover advanced with a goal.

With 28 minutes left in the second half, Dover led 3-2, then 4-2 four minutes later.

Webutuck Coach Kevin Doyle praised goalie Juan Pablo Espinoza for his performance in blocking goals by Dover. Stone Scasso scored two goals for Webutuck while Tyler Howard assisted with one of the goals.

However, Doyle commented that the number of shots Dover took was a turning point in the game as Webutuck gave up too many corner kicks. Dover had nine corner kicks while Webutuck had only four. Dover also out shot Webutuck on goal at 18-10. Webutuck lost to Dover with a final score of 5-2.

“We’re a very young team,” Doyle said. “We have three freshmen starting; it won’t be that way all year long, but for now we need them till the other team players get back.

On a positive note, the coach said that “the future is bright for the Webutuck program. The season is going to get better.”

KENT – The cold temperatures and biting winds didn’t deter a crowd from gathering for the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Standing in front of the memorials honoring local residents who served in the military, First Selectman Martin Lindenmayer, himself a veteran, said the day is “not only a time to remember history, but to recognize the people among us—neighbors, friends and family—who have served with courage, sacrifice and devotion. Whether they stood guard in distant lands or supported their comrades from home, their service has preserved the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
