Welcoming 16 new teachers to Region One

This year, there are 16 new teachers in the Region One School District, which includes the elementary schools in Canaan/Falls Village, Cornwall, Kent, Sharon, Salisbury and North Canaan, as well as Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS).

Diane Bossers, Lee H. Kellogg School in Falls Village, middle school math. A graduate of the University of Connecticut and Southern Connecticut State University, she began her teaching career as a foreign language teacher at Southington High School. She has a cross-endorsement for mathematics. Bossers lives in Gaylordsville. Salary: $49,340.

 

Katherine Bucceri, Salisbury Central School, fourth grade. Bucceri is a Salisbury native and attended Salisbury Central School and then Gannon University, Northwestern Connecticut Community College and Grand Canyon College. She has worked for Region One as a special education paraprofessional. She lives in Lakeville. Salary: $44,234.

 

Casey Burke, Kent Center School, grade two. Burke graduated from Southern Connecticut State University. She lives in Goshen. Salary: $43,155.

 

Gillian Fox, HVRHS, Spanish and German. Fox is a graduate of Southern Connecticut State University and has a master’s degree from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. For the last six years she taught at the college level. She lives in Middletown. Salary: $53,303.

 

Carol Hackett, Salisbury Central School, middle school science. Hackett’s previous job was teaching high school biology in Region 15. She completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Connecticut. She lives in Lakeville with her husband, Pat. Salary: $34,015.

 

Kylie Jacobs, Salisbury Central School, grade three. Jacobs attended Kent Center School  and HVRHS. She graduated from Western Connecticut State University with a BS degree and completed her student teaching at Mill Ridge Primary School in Danbury. Last year she worked as a paraprofessional at SCS. She lives in Salisbury. Salary: $44,234.

 

Janet Johnson, HVRHS, art. Johnson is a graduate of Central Connecticut State University and taught art in Region 7. She and her husband live in New Hartford. Salary: $53,988.

 

Sarah Lyon, Region One, special education grades three to five. Lyon is a graduate of HVRHS and attended Western Connecticut State University and Central Connecticut State University. She has been working in special education for nine years. She lives with her husband and son in Gaylordsville. Salary: $63,201. 

 

Danielle Medico, North Canaan Elementary School, preschool special education. She received her bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University. She has taught students ranging from infancy to second grade in special and general education classrooms. She lives in Simsbury. Salary: $45,072.

 

Kirsten Merritt, Salisbury Central School, kindergarten. Merritt received her degree from Western Connecticut State University. She will be familiar to Salisbury residents from her job at the Salisbury Pharmacy. She lives in Lakeville.  Salary: $44,234.

 

Jennifer Mitchell, Salisbury Central School, grade three. She attended St. Joseph’s College. Mitchell has taught in Maine, Maryland and Connecticut for more than 13 years. She has taught pre-k, kindergarten, second grade, third grade and special education. She lives in Lakeville with her husband and three children. Salary: $57,461.

 

Dena Noubleau, North Canaan Elementary School, grade two. Noubleau is entering her 25th year of teaching, in Brooklyn and Long Beach, N.Y., and Tampa, Fla. She is a graduate of St. Joseph’s College and lives with her husband in Kent. Salary: $82,544.

 

Courtney Tomich, North Canaan Elementary School, kindergarten. Tomich grew up in Kent and attended Kent Center School and HVRHS. She graduated from Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. She has taught pre-school, grade two and kindergarten. Tomich lives with her husband and children in Sheffield. Salary:$44, 633.

 

Laura D’Averso will teach ninth- and 10th-grade science as a long-term substitute at HVRHS. She is a graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University and lives in Naugatuck. Salary: $18,323.

 

Rene Boardman, Housatonic Valley Regional High School, Ag-Ed. Boardman, an HVRHS graduate, received a degree in Agricultural Science from the State University of New York at Cobleskill. She lives in Sheffield. Salary: $45,072. Boardman  was not available for a photo.

 

Jennifer Bergin, Sharon Center School, science (grades five to eight). Bergin has a BA from St. Michael’s College, an MS from Central Connecticut State University and received her teaching certificate from Western Connecticut State University. She lives with her family in Goshen. Salary: $84,892. Bergin was not available for a photo.

CORNWALL — Clyde Perham Weed, 74, passed away peacefully at his home in West Cornwall, Connecticut on Sunday, August 17.

Clyde was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Jeanne and Herbert Weed. He was the grandson and namesake of Clyde E. Weed, Chairman of the board of Anaconda Copper.

Backgammon series begins at Hotchkiss Library of Sharon
Backgammon lessons kicked off Wednesday, Aug. 13, at The Hotchkiss Library. Instructor Roger Lourie works with Pam Jarvis of Sharon, while his wife, Claude, assists at a second board with Janet Kaufman of Salisbury.

In light of rising local interest in the centuries-old game of Backgammon, Wednesday afternoon backgammon instruction and play sessions are being offered at The Hotchkiss Library of Sharon. The first such session was held on Wednesday, Aug. 13, attracting two enthusiastic participants, both of whom resolved to return for the weekly sessions.

Expert player and instructor Roger Lourie of Sharon, along with his equally expert wife, Claude, led the session, jumping right into the action of playing the game. Claude chose to pair with Janet Kaufman of Salisbury, a moderately experienced player looking to improve her skills, while Lourie teamed himself with Pam Jarvis of Sharon, who was new to the game.
