Whiting Mills artists show off their work

WINSTED — The Shops & Artists at Whiting Mills held a fall open house Saturday, Oct. 2, that drew in crowds from the Fall Foliage Festival. The shared gallery was filled with new work by all the artists at the Mill.

Artist Gay Schempp was working on her encaustic paintings.

“This is something new I’m working on, using beeswax painting layer over layer and putting images or drawings underneath each layer to create a multidimensional collage,� she said.

Theresa Cannavo demonstrated how she sews recycled animal feed bags into carrying bags, shopping bags and purses.

“It’s a really great, creative way to reuse your animal feed bags with a little bit of style,� she said. “I can make them in any size and they are incredibly sturdy and all recyclable.�

Further down the hall on the fourth floor, Philip Allen of Workhouse Studio was hard at work demonstrating how he makes one-of-a-kind, shaped-to-fit, hand-knitted and felted slippers.

“We do a lot here, from the slippers, which are perfect for a cold winter day, to hand-woven fabric, scarves, shawls, rugs and other hand knitted and belted pieces,� Allen said.

Visitors were also able to watch Cheryl Bartley design and paint a new mural for her studio door.

“I am starting to expand my business into painting murals of my classic folk art scenes, starting with my door,� she said. “I’m really hoping it’ll catch on.�

The next event for the Shops & Artists at Whiting Mill will be in November, with a holiday theme.

KENT — Connecticut Antique Machinery Association (CAMA) opened its 2024 season April 27 and 28 with the Spring Startup.

Steam engine No. 5 offered happy riders a trip through the CAMA grounds situated on Route 7. The open-air museum was filled with displays of engineering antiquities for a weekend of educational enjoyment.

Millerton Road fire extinguished quickly, no injuries

LAKEVILLE — The Lakeville Hose Company responded to a fire in a second-floor bedroom at 301 Millerton Rd. Thursday, April 25, around 8:50 p.m.

The first car to respond reported smoke coming from the second floor. A second alarm was struck, and fire companies from Sharon, Falls Village and Millerton responded, with Norfolk as backup.
