You Win Some, You Lose Some: Housy Girls Basketball


The Housatonic girls varsity basketball team defeated Northwestern 43-39 on Jan. 16. Tied at the half, Housy rallied in the third quarter and led by five going into the fourth.

Northwestern came back to tie the score in the fourth, but the Mountaineers took the lead in the final minute of the game.

Paxton and Sawyer Thornton each scored 12 points; Sawyer Thornton pulled down 12 rebounds, Paxton Thornton had 11 rebounds and four assists. Lily Belter scored eight points and Elissa Whitmore added six, including three key foul shots at the end that helped clinch the win.

The girls varsity team then beat Gilbert 56-51 on Friday, Jan. 19, in a well-played game. Although Gilbert played hard and managed to catch up, Housy never let them take the lead. Sawyer Thornton led the scoring with 19 points and nine rebounds. Whitmore had her best game yet with 14 points and three assists. Paxton Thornton added 11 points and five assists; Sheri Boardman had five points and seven rebounds; Belter added five points.

The team lost a close game to Wamogo, 53-48, on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

The Mountaineers nearly tied the game when Belter launched a three-pointer with 12 seconds left on the clock, but the shot just missed. Paxton Thornton had 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists; Sawyer Thornton put in 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds; and Belter and Boardman each added six points. Boardman also had seven rebounds, and Allycia Reel had four points and five rebounds.

The JV team defeated Gilbert 34-21 Jan. 19. Sarah Godburn and Sarah Dudek led the scoring with five apiece; Godburn had 14 rebounds and Dudek seven. Kellie Christensen, Alissa Riley, Amanda Tyler and Rene Boardman all had four points (10 girls scored in all).

The JV team lost a close game to Wamogo on Jan. 23, dropping a 26-21 decision.

Dan Howe’s time machine

“Every picture begins with just a collection of good shapes,” said painter and illustrator Dan Howe, standing amid his paintings and drawings at the Kearcher-Monsell Gallery at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. The exhibit, which opened on Friday, March 7, and runs through April 10, spans decades and influences, from magazine illustration to portrait commissions to imagined worlds pulled from childhood nostalgia. The works — some luminous and grand, others intimate and quiet — show an artist whose technique is steeped in history, but whose sensibility is wholly his own.

Born in Madison, Wisconsin, and trained at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Howe’s artistic foundation was built on rigorous, old-school principles. “Back then, art school was like boot camp,” he recalled. “You took figure drawing five days a week, three hours a day. They tried to weed people out, but it was good training.” That discipline led him to study under Tom Lovell, a renowned illustrator from the golden age of magazine art. “Lovell always said, ‘No amount of detail can save a picture that’s commonplace in design.’”
