Amenia Garden Club celebrates private gardens

AMENIA — Residents looking to surround themselves in the area’s scenic beauty are invited to tour seven private gardens on Saturday, July 14, as part of the Amenia Garden Club’s  celebration of private gardens.

When the event’s original organizers moved away, the Garden Club took a hiatus from hosting the tour. Though plans to reintroduce it started to hatch last year, garden enthusiasts had to wait until this summer to enjoy the area gardens featured on the tour.

Aimed at creating an event “with the same flavor but a different formula,” Amenia Garden Club President Andy Durbridge said, “We’ve broadened our horizons a little bit and embraced a few different areas.”

Previously only gardens in Amenia were on the tour, but the club wanted to reach out to other areas this year, including Millbrook, and in Connecticut, Falls Village and Sharon.

Rain or shine, this year’s event  features seven private gardens: Squirrel Hall in Millbrook; Cobble Pond Farm in Sharon; Neverest in Wassaic; and Broccoli Hall, Jade Hill, Phantom’s Rock and St. Thomas Episcopal Church’s Food of Life Pantry and Giving Garden in Amenia.

Also this year, the tour will focus on St. Thomas Episcopal Church’s vegetable garden and how it ties into its food pantry. The recently re-opened Troutbeck will also be featured.

“It puts a different spin on gardens,” Durbridge said. “We’ve got everything from a very small garden in a village setting to a large estate garden in a larger setting, and everything between the two. It’s so you don’t have lots of gardens with similar themes or content.”

A Celebration of Private Gardens will be held on Saturday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Starting at 9 a.m., tickets can be purchased for $25 the day of the event from the official Amenia Garden Club tent at  Amenia Town Hall, located at 4988 Route 22. Spectators can also buy tickets in advance with a 10-percent discount on the Amenia Garden Club website at www.ameniagardens.org. Advance tickets will be available online until the night before the garden tour.

Once they purchase their tickets, attendees can take self-guided tours and visit the gardens in any order they like. Along with a map of the tour’s gardens and driving directions, tickets will include exclusive coupons for the Twin Brooks Garden Center in Millbrook and Paley’s Market and Farm Center in Sharon.

On top of admission to the seven gardens, attendees are invited to stop by educational demonstrations. At 11 a.m., Broccoli Hall owner Maxine Paetro will share the story of her garden’s development and present an introduction to her special Koi breeding program. At 2 p.m., Wendy Goidel, a professional floral designer and owner of Phantom’s Rock, will give a demonstration on how to create floral arrangements.

“What we’ve tried to do is add new and interesting things that people might want to participate in and enjoy,” Durbridge said.

Additionally, Troutbeck will be offering a special Amenia Garden Tour lunch for $35 by reservation only. To book lunch in advance, attendees must call 845-789-1555 and are advised to mention the Amenia Garden Club.

The art of Marilyn Hock

Waterlily (8”x12”) made by Marilyn Hock

It takes a lot of courage to share your art for the first time and Marilyn Hock is taking that leap with her debut exhibition at Sharon Town Hall on Sept. 12. A realist painter with a deep love for wildlife, florals, and landscapes, Hock has spent the past few years immersed in watercolor, teaching herself, failing forward, and returning again and again to the page. This 18-piece collection is a testament to courage, practice and a genuine love for the craft.

“I always start with the eyes,” said Hock of her animal portraits. “That’s where the soul lives.” This attentiveness runs through her work, each piece rendered with care, clarity, and a respect for the subtle variations of color and light in the natural world.
