Bus accident arrest made

Salisbury — The driver who hit the rear of a Region One school bus on the first day of school has been arrested for drunk driving.

William Dowling, 19, of Saratoga, N.Y., (listed in a previous police report as residing in Glastonbury) was arrested on a warrant last week. He was charged with driving under the influence, following too closely, making a false statement to purchase liquor and drinking while operating a motor vehicle on Aug. 31.

The school bus, owned by All-star Transportation, was carrying 21 students from Kent and two from Cornwall. It was headed for Housatonic Valley Regional High School and was stopped at the temporary traffic light on Route 7 at the bridge construction projectwithin sight of the school. At about 7:30 a.m. it was struck by Dowling’s 1994 Honda Accord.

Dowling and passenger Robert Paris, 17, of Rye, N.Y., were taken from the heavily damaged car and brought by ambulance to Sharon Hospital. Police reported no injuries, but said the pair would be evaluated. That evaluation included testing for blood alcohol levels.

There were no injuries to the bus driver, a 4-year-old girl on board or the students.

Bond for Dowling was set at $500. He is to appear in Bantam Superior Court Nov. 2.

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
