Carolyn Angela Mastronardi

WINCHESTER — Carolyn Angela “Nona†(Costobella) Mastronardi, 90, died Oct. 25, 2009, unexpectedly but peacefully at Sharon Hospital. She was the wife of Francis D. Mastronardi.

Mrs. Mastronardi was born July 20, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She graduated from the New York School of Fashion and employed her skills as a talented seamstress and clothing designer. While living in Uniondale, N.Y., she was employed by BOCES of Nassau County, where she worked as a paraprofessional for children with cerebral palsy. Upon retirement in 1980, she and her husband, Frank, built and moved into their dream home in Goshen.

She enjoyed playing golf and gardening, as well as sewing and exercising. Several years after the death of her husband, she moved in with her daughter, Marilyn, in Winchester. For the last three years, she lived at the Geer Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in North Canaan.

She was remembered as a dedicated mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Mastronardi is survived by three children, Marilyn Brennan of Winchester, Frank and his wife, Phyllis Mastronardi, of Southbury and Linda and her husband, Bob Kryjak, of Covington, La.; four grandchildren, Michael Brennan, Matthew and his wife, Michele Brennan, Kristin and her husband, Chris Looney, Emily and her husband, Chip Riggs; and eight great-grandchildren, Katie, Joshua, Jackson, Elaina, Logan, T.J., Dominic and Lilly. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Connie and Mary; and a brother, Joseph.

Services were held Nov. 2 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, Winsted, and at St. Thomas of Villanova Cemetery, Goshen. “Every picture begins with just a collection of good shapes,” said painter and illustrator Dan Howe, standing amid his paintings and drawings at the Kearcher-Monsell Gallery at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. The exhibit, which opened on Friday, March 7, and runs through April 10, spans decades and influences, from magazine illustration to portrait commissions to imagined worlds pulled from childhood nostalgia. The works — some luminous and grand, others intimate and quiet — show an artist whose technique is steeped in history, but whose sensibility is wholly his own.

Born in Madison, Wisconsin, and trained at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Howe’s artistic foundation was built on rigorous, old-school principles. “Back then, art school was like boot camp,” he recalled. “You took figure drawing five days a week, three hours a day. They tried to weed people out, but it was good training.” That discipline led him to study under Tom Lovell, a renowned illustrator from the golden age of magazine art. “Lovell always said, ‘No amount of detail can save a picture that’s commonplace in design.’”
