Debut novelist Diane Meier at Sharon book signing Aug. 6

SHARON —For three years in a row, Kent resident Diane Meier quietly attended the annual Sharon Summer Book Signing with her husband, bestselling author Frank Delaney, whose latest book is “Venetia Kelly’s Traveling Show.

This summer will mark Delaney’s fourth year at the literary benefit for the Hotchkiss Library of Sharon. It’s also the first where Meier will emerge from the sidelines to sign copies of her own book: an acclaimed debut novel entitled “The Season of Second Chances.

The story of a New York college professor who buys an old house in a small New England town, it’s a book that may resonate with local readers.

“It’s about a woman renovating her house and her life at an age when she thought she’d already accomplished it all, Meier said. “Moving to a small town opens her up in ways I think most people here will recognize.

Meier, who runs a marketing company in Manhattan, said she and Delaney spend much of their time at their home in Kent, where a converted barn serves as a combined workspace.

Both are fervent supporters of libraries and are often called upon for readings and special events. The Sharon Summer Book Signing is a favorite, she said.

“I love the library, the way it’s situated on that lovely shady main street. It’s a dream of a library; a nostalgic dream, perhaps, in this digital age.

More than 30 authors and illustrators, many of them from the area, are expected at the benefit Aug. 6, which starts at 6 p.m.

“Litchfield County has two great natural resources: rocks and writers, said Meier. “We probably have more professional writers per square foot than any other place in America. It must be in the water.

The 14th Annual Sharon Summer Book Signing is Friday, Aug. 6, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Hotchkiss Library of Sharon. The $25 admission includes wine and hors d’oeuvres.
