Elks host Hoop Shoot

WINSTED — The Winsted Elks Lodge 844 held its annual Hoop Shoot at the Winsted YMCA on Saturday, Dec. 17.The contest, which is also held at the regional and national levels, is a free-throw competition open to children ages 8 to 13. The athlete who makes the most points of 25 shots at the free-throw line wins the competition for his or her age group. Jillian Wexler won in the girls’ 10- to 11-year-old division, while Ali Brochu won in the girls’ 12- to 13-year-old division.In the boys’ division, Hunter Smith won in the 8- to 9-year-old division, Dylan Smith won in the 10- to 11-year-old division and Austin Smith won in the 12- to 13-year-old division.The local winners will move on to the regional contest and, if they win, will compete in the national finals.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
