Hundreds of new skiers enjoy free day on slopes

CORNWALL — Mohawk Mountain Ski Area and Sharon Hospital sponsored a free First Experience Day on Saturday, Dec. 22, at the ski area in Cornwall. The experience was open to anyone age 5 or older.First Experience Day participants received, at no cost: a custom-fit equipment rental package (skiing or snowboarding), a lesson from one of the ski area’s professional instructors at the Learning Center at Mohawk Mountain and a four-hour lift ticket valid on the beginners lifts. By noon, Mohawk Mountain had registered more than 200 new skiers. While the skiing or snowboarding experience was free, participants were asked to bring a donation of canned food or another nonperishable food item, to be given to people in need. Donations of warm winter coats were also accepted.Sharon Hospital registered nurse Heather Zavagnin and her husband, Bob Zavagnin, a Sharon Hospital maintenance employee, manned the Donation Station at the covered bridge entrance to the main building.Mohawk Mountain Sales Coordinator Tom Mitchell said there were long lines of people waiting to sign up for the program all morning on Dec. 22.When The Lakeville Journal visited Mohawk Mountain around noon, a number of snow machines were in operation, ensuring participants had a good cover of snow for their first experience on the slopes.While there were no official numbers, it appeared that 15 to 20 percent of skiers were teenagers or younger. At least 50 or more young children were busy practicing what they had learned during their free lessons; there were more skiers than snowboarders.At noon, most tables in the lodge were filled with snow enthusiasts enjoying lunch. The Mohawk Mountain Ski Area parking lot was filled with cars as experienced skiers and snowboarders joined the first-timers in taking advantage of the slopes on a bright, cold December day.For more information on programs at Mohawk Mountain Ski Area go to www.mohawkmtn.com

Kent moves closer to reopening Emery Park swimming pond

It may look dormant now, but the Emery Park pond is expected to return to life in 2026

KENT — Despite sub-zero wind chills, Kent’s Parks and Recreation Commission is focused on summer.

At its Tuesday, Dec. 2, meeting, the Commission voted in favor of a bid to rehabilitate Emery Park’s swimming pond, bringing the town one step closer to regaining its municipal swimming facility. The Commission reviewed two RFP bids for the reconstruction of the defunct swimming pond, a stream-fed, man-made basin that has been out of use for six years. The plans call to stabilize and level the concrete deck and re-line the interior of the pool alongside other structural upgrades, as well as add aesthetic touches such as boulders along the pond’s edge.
