Great resource for health-care professionals

I am writing to remind your readers of an amazing community resource that has supported me as I pursue my education as a health care professional.

The Tabor Foundation Fund at Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation offers scholarships for students of any age in any health care field who are planning to use what they learn to serve their community here in northwest Connecticut or in northeast Dutchess County.

Thanks to the Tabor Fund, I graduated from Naugatuck Valley Community College in 2014 with an associate’s degree in nursing. The fund is also supporting me as I further my education and work toward a bachelor’s degree. An extraordinary feature of the fund is its flexibility, allowing a busy mother of three like me to purchase a laptop so I can fit in online classes as needed. Over the years, the fund has helped cover costs for tuition, books, uniforms and even gas! Having the financial assistance allowed me to only have to work part time throughout nursing school, so I could attend full-time classes, keep my grades up and keep things running smoothly at home.

Starting as a candy striper in elementary school and heading toward my desired career as a nurse, I have always wanted to care for people in our community. The Tabor Fund has made that a reality for me, and it can for you, too. The deadline for 2016 scholarships is June 30. You can learn more at www.berkshiretaconic.org/tabor.

School spirit on the rise at Housy

Students dressed in neon lined the soccer field for senior night under the lights on Thursday, Oct. 16. The game against Lakeview was the last in a series of competitions Thursday night in celebration of Homecoming 2025.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

Student initiatives shake up Homecoming
The poster promoting the Homecoming dance boasted the event would feature dancing, games and a bonfire. Reactions to the planned move outside were mixed, with some students excited about the changes and others expressing a desire for tradition.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
