More and more, the region CARES

SHARON — About 15years ago Ella Clark, social services director in Sharon; Diane Heiny, who worked for the former Northwest Center for Family and Mental Health, now CMHA; and Trish Walsh, who ran senior programs in Lakeville, realized there was no network of professionals serving older adults. Heiny said, “We felt there was a valid reason to form such a network, in order to share experiences and learn about new trends.” The three senior services professionals started CARES, the Coalition of Agencies Related to Elder Services.Clark said, “While our initial plan was to focus only on elder services, over the years we have broadened our self-created mandate to include all social services.”Though CARES has remained an informal organization all these years, attendance at the monthly meetings has grown to include representatives from about 20 state, local and regional organizations. CARES meets the first Wednesday of every month, except July and August, at Geer in North Canaan.Clark said some topics discussed at meetings might include, “fuel assistance for the elderly; effects on budget cuts for elderly services; protection for seniors; grants for mental health; training courses for professionals working with the elderly; coping with increased food costs; caring for dementia patients; elderly financial concerns; elderly health screenings; developing strategies to mobilize health resources for seniors; senior lunch programs; senior housing options and frustrations, and other eldercare-related topics. At a recent meeting, Emily Bronson, program coordinator at the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, spoke about funds availability; and Jocelyn Ayer, senior planner with the Northwestern Connecticut Regional Planning Collaborative, talked about senior housing challenges and opportunities. Heiny said, “CARES now provides a viable mechanism for social services professionals to network, learn what other towns are doing and become familiar with new trends and programs.” Clark’s take on CARES is, “It’s a forum for conversations. It helps us to learn about situations that are of interest to us.”In 1999 CARES created a booklet of elder resources for professionals and the communities. Clark said they plan to update the booklet in the near future to include all social services, from birth to death.Heiny said, “Even though we now include all social services, not just for the elderly, the acronym CARES really said what the group is all about.”

Indigo girls: a collaboration in process and pigment
Artist Christy Gast

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
