The price of fun hasn't changed

WINSTED — Since opening in 1990, R&B’s Sportsworld has been the place to go during the summer for both residents and visitors. A mini-golf course, go-carts and batting cages make the complex an attraction for people of all ages.

In an interview with The Winsted Journal, the owner of R&B’s Sportsworld, Bob Moore, explained both the history and future plans at this entertainment Mecca, where high gas prices have not affected the price of go-carts or batting cages.

"I believe prices should be very reasonable," Moore said. "With the way the economy is, it is hard to find many affordable, fun things for families to do any more."

As an example, a family of four can easily spend $50 at the movies with snacks and drinks. The same family of four could do one go-cart race, a round of mini-golf, and a batting cage session each for less than that. Other amenities offered at R&B’s include phazerball (also known as laser tag), billiards, battle-ball, an arcade and an ice cream stand with 35 flavors of soft serve to top it all off.

In recent years, Moore has focused on changing the look of the mini-golf course. New mulch has been added, and the first hole has been given a makeover.

"We have a nautical theme for our mini-golf course. We know how much Highland Lake, for example, means to the community and we try to replicate it any way we can," said Moore. One of the holes, titled "The Spillways," is a hole with elevation changes named after the actual spillway cars splash through as they arrive and leave the lake.

Moore also plans to offer old-fashioned birthday packages this fall.

"I thought it would be really neat to have old-fashioned parties here. We will be offering different price packages that will include such favorites as musical chairs, pin the tail, beanbag tosses and others," said Moore.

Regular birthday packages will continue to be offered, including go-carting, mini-golf, phazerball and other activities.
