Reading across America

NORTH CANAAN — Hats, lots of books and students well-practiced at reading out loud celebrated Read Across America Day March 1 at North Canaan Elementary School.The youngest students wore paper red-and-white-striped hats, in the style of The Cat in the Hat. Older students grabbed favorite books and headed to primary classrooms to read. They found their younger audiences often taking over and demonstrating great reading skills.They also joined more than 45 million young readers on that day. The National Education Association-sponsored day recognizes the March 2 birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, best known as the author Dr. Seuss.The entire school began the party by reciting the Read Across America Day pledge, which says in part:Each book that I readPuts smarts in my head,’Cause brains grow more thoughtsThe more they are fed.
