Revelers embrace community spirit at New Year’s celebration

WINSTED — Live music and karaoke rocked a sold-out Winsted Elks Lodge on New Year’s Eve, as more than 100 members and guests gathered to ring in 2013 with a display of community spirit and friendship.Lodge member and chef Griffin “Griff” Travaglin organized the bash with the help of an army of volunteers, serving up rib eye steaks, baked potatoes, Caesar salad and pasta. A steady stream of gourmet hors d’oeuvres preceded the dinner, while the musical duo Big City Stylz took care of the live entertainment.“This is an amazing night,” said the lodge’s Exalted Ruler Matthew Schlosser, who wore his trademark shorts to the event, despite it being one of the coldest nights of the year. “We’re glad to see so many people turn out.”Travaglin took to a microphone at the end of dinner to introduce Big City Stylz and to thank everyone who had helped cook and serve dinner for the party.“This isn’t my party, it’s our party,” he said. “I couldn’t have done this without all of your help.”Kitchen and grill helpers included Jere Beach, Lee Williams, Don McCurdy, Heather Murphy, Ed Tullock and Karen Papp, while numerous friends of Travaglin were on hand to help with waitressing and cleanup duties. Bartenders Fred Wiarda and Winter Sramek kept the refreshments flowing as the dance floor rollicked to crowd favorites “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” by the Georgia Satellites, the Beatles version of “Twist and Shout” and Steve Miller’s “The Joker.” Following their set, Big City Stylz broke out the karaoke machine, giving revelers a chance to ham it up.At 11 p.m. a ceremonial toast, led by Schlosser, paid solemn tribute “to our absent members” symbolized the bond shared by members of the Elks organization. The cherished tradition was a special moment for many who joined hands in an amicable circle, singing “Auld Lang Syne” with band accompaniment, an hour before the midnight countdown.“It feels very wonderful to spend New Year’s Eve with such warm and loving people,” member Frank Root said after he posed for a picture along with his fiancée Gail Yukash at a couple’s photo booth. “I honestly can’t think of another place to spend a New Year’s Eve.”Shaw Israel Izikson contributed to this story.
