Rita L. (Foley) Blodgett

NORTH CANAAN — Rita L. (Foley) Blodgett, 88, of Church Street died Dec. 12, 2012, at her daughter’s home with whom she lived. Rita was the widow of Donald R. Blodgett Sr. She was born Aug. 14, 1924, in Bridgeport, Conn., the daughter of the late Helen (Fitzgerald) and James Foley.Rita was employed at the Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Canaan, where she worked in the kitchen. She worked at Geer for 33 years before retiring some 10 years ago. Rita was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church, and enjoyed going to horseraces and casinos and vacationing in Florida. She is survived by her sons, Donald R. Blodgett Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Sharon and Joseph E. Blodgett and his wife, Sandra, of North Canaan; her daughter, Donna L. Blodgett, also of North Canaan; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter, Teah. Graveside services were held on Dec. 15, in the Mountain View Cemetery in North Canaan. Memorial donations may be sent to the Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association, 30A Salmon Kill Road, Salisbury, CT 06068. Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

KENT — Residents now have access to around-the-clock food-scrap composting thanks to two newly installed organics “smart bins,” unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday morning, Dec. 1.

Rick Osborne, manager of the Kent Transfer Station, placed the first bag of food scraps into the smart bin located at 3 Railroad St. A second bin has been installed outside the Transfer Station gate, allowing 24/7 public access even when the facility is closed.

Cornwall selectmen prioritize housing, healthcare in new two-year goals

CORNWALL — Housing and healthcare topped the list of 15 goals the Board of Selectmen set for the next two years, reflecting the board’s view that both areas warrant continued attention.

First Selectman Gordon Ridgway and Selectmen Rocco Botto and John Brown outlined their priorities during the board’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 2. On housing, the board discussed supporting organizations working to create affordable options in town, and Botto said the town should also pursue additional land acquisitions for future housing.
