100 years ago — October 1919

SALISBURY — Sgt. Frank Sherwood, who has been with the regular army doing strike duty in the steel strike, has received his discharge and has returned to Salisbury.

 

SALISBURY — Mrs. Harry Jones and son Charles have gone to Winsted where they are keeping house.

 

LAKEVILLE — While picking apples on Tuesday Morgan Ebert fell from the tree, but fortunately was not injured beyond a few bruises and scratches.

 

LIME ROCK — On Tuesday evening the roof of the lower foundry caught fire which caused some excitement for a little while.

 

50 years ago — October 1969

Seaman David B. Lovett, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irving Lovett of Salisbury, is serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea undergoing an Operational Readiness Inspection near Pearl Harbor.

 

A horse belonging to Longreen Farms, Wells Hill Road, Lakeville, was killed when a trailer carrying the horse broke away from a pickup truck and crashed into a tree last Friday afternoon on Route 41 in Sharon near the intersection of Stonehouse Road.

 

SALISBURY — The congregation of St. John’s Church will worship at Salisbury School Chapel this Sunday at 11 a.m. and each week thereafter, until repairs are completed on the ceiling of St. John’s sanctuary.

 

NORFOLK — A 20-room house on Westside Road, not occupied since 1938, was razed by fire last Tuesday. Its Long Island owner had employed the Jones Destruction Co. to demolish it. The fire, cause unknown, erupted shortly before 1:30 p.m. An alert Journal reader, George Smith, took a picture with his Minolta camera. 

 

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hart Vining will observe their 57th anniversary today at their home in East Canaan. They were married in Colebrook Oct. 23, 1912, by the Rev. James R. Hewitt. The Vinings report they enjoy good health and are actively occupied in the business of repairing and making seats for chairs.

 

25 years ago — October 1994

SALISBURY — In response to Halloween related vandalism last year that left two homes ransacked, a number of gravestones defaced and the windows of some businesses shot up, the town will impose a 9 p.m. curfew Monday Oct. 31. The curfew will apply to all juveniles not accompanied by an adult.

Man, 60, dies in single-car crash on Route 272 in Norfolk

Norfolk fire and ambulance crews responded to a one-vehicle crash on Route 272 (Litchfield Road) shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14.

NORFOLK — A 60-year-old Oregon man is dead after a single-car crash Friday, Nov. 14, according to Connecticut State Police.

Kevin Scott, of Portland, was driving a Ford Escape southbound on Route 272 (Litchfield Road) when he exited the roadway while negotiating a curve and struck a utility pole. The Ford rolled onto its side and the airbags deployed. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and there were no passengers in the car.

GNH collides with Holy Cross

WINSTED — Holy Cross High School won 36-20 against the Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic co-op football team Saturday, Nov. 15.

The hard-fought contest was won in the air. Holy Cross QB Brady Lombardo completed 16/31 passes for 309 yards with five touchdowns and one interception.

NEWTOWN — Housatonic Valley Regional High School's girls soccer team's state tournament run concluded in the semifinals with a 4-2 loss to Morgan High School Wednesday, Nov. 12.

The final four finish was the deepest playoff push for Housatonic since 2014. Lainey Diorio scored both goals and keeper Vi Salazar logged 10 saves in the semifinal game.
