What’s with those oversized truck loads?

Regular sightings have been reported over the last couple of weeks of oversized loads escorted by lots of vehicles with flashing lights traveling through the area on Route 44.

Those loads are long sections of 10-foot-diameter steel cylinders that are part of three commercial wind turbines under construction in Colebrook, off Flagg Hill Road there.

The cylinders will be pieced together into supporting towers that will soar more than 300 feet. They are being brought first to a staging area at the M.J. Mulville and Sons sand and gravel operation in East Canaan.

Among the things they are not is containers of fracking waste. That is one rumor that has been going around the area. The concern was even brought to an informal town meeting with state Sen. Clark Chapin held in North Canaan on July 28.

Chapin said the Legislature passed a bill last year promoting the expansion of the natural gas network in Connecticut.

“That means we can’t really say no to waste, but we passed a moratorium on it until the state can develop regulations,” Chapin said. “I’m pretty sure the moratorium includes transporting waste through the state.”

Another three towers are planned by BNE Energy for the north side of Route 44 at Rock Hall Road, so it seems likely those cylinders are going to become a familiar sight.
