Winsted math scores most improved in state

WINSTED — Winchester Superintendent of Schools Melony Brady-Shanley told the Board of Education on Tuesday, Sept. 11, that the district has been commended for having the most improved math test scores in the state on the Smarter Balanced Assessment test.

The Smarter Balanced Assessment replaced the state’s older test, known as the Connecticut Mastery Test, for students in grades three to eight.

Brady-Shanley told the board that in the 2017-18 academic year, 46.9 percent of Pearson middle school students met the proficiency standard for the math test, compared to 28.50 in 2016-17.

In English language arts, 46.9 percent of Pearson students met the proficiency standard in 2017-18, compared to 40.9 in 2016-17.

Brady-Shanley told the board that the state has commended the school district for having the most improved math scores in Connecticut.

Brady-Shanley thanked the staff of the school district and the Board of Education.

“The board has put politics aside and is committed to the business of kids,” Brady-Shanley said.

In other business, Brady-Shanley said that the district received six responses to its Request For Proposals (RFPs) for the possible renovation of the Hinsdale School.

The RFPs will be reviewed by the district so that board members can discuss them at their meeting in October.

Brady-Shanley added that the district has undertaken several new projects, including a new playground at Pearson that is scheduled to open by the end of the month; and a science laboratory at Batcheller Early Education Center, which is still under construction.
