Annual Strawberry Fair to be June 11

AMENIA — The 38th annual Strawberry Fair returns Saturday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Celebrate the strawberry with one of the fair’s famous strawberry sundaes. Strawberries will also be available for sale by the box and by the flat.Numerous vendors will sell their wares on the grounds of the United Presbyterian Church, which sponsors the event. Live music, food, a petting zoo, a clown, a bake sale and raffles will provide entertainment throughout the day.On an adjacent property, the Amenia Library will hold its annual book sale and silent auction.Admission to the day’s festivities is free and the event will be held rain or shine.The United Presbyterian Church is located on Route 22 just north of the light, next door to the Amenia Town Hall.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
