In appreciation: George Kiefer

No one makes a bold pronouncement like this lightly, but I will gladly venture to say that George Kiefer led “a perfect life.” Perfect by his own specifications as to how he wanted to spend his time. Yet not so perfect that he drove anyone around him crazy with his personal habits, am I right?

Someone said George loved women and they loved him back. But I would have to say that George seemed beloved by all, including cats and creatures of the woods, not to mention the maple sap that ran down to greet him each spring. And it was not just a seasonal love — we all just kept loving him on and on, as did any woman lucky enough to be in his life, I’ll bet.

Why? George remembered everyone! Even those he didn’t know awfully well. Just to know you were even a small part of George’s life made you feel special.

And on a recent evening when Frank and I brought him dinner, he was genuinely curious to get to know my husband’s beginnings. Never too late to come to know someone new.

It seems that George was very good at assigning priorities without declaring them. To visit him in his cabin was a chance to see all that was most important: the book he was reading within easy reach, the amber light to read it by, the wood stove churned up pretty high, table cleared for a plate, cat allowed to come and go with no bother, and just the right solitude combined with family and friends checking in. But always the instant recognition when we all showed up. Instantaneous!

People can talk about all of George’s contributions to the town, its trails, its timber, and his oversight, but most memorable is that Lincoln-like stature combined with welcoming nature that made it so easy to drop by … and then leave, knowing he was very comfortable by himself as well. Boy, did he get it right!
