Beach to close with pirate party

PINE PLAINS — The Pine Plains Recreation Department is wrapping up another season at the town beach located at Stissing Lake off of Beach Road.

The beach opened on June 17 and will close with a pirate-themed party this Friday, Aug. 21, from noon to 3 p.m.

The party will start with “carnival activities” including a cannonball toss, walk-the-plank, face painting and arts and crafts.

Lunch at 1:30 p.m. will provide hamburgers and hotdogs to attendees.

After lunch is a “pirate peg leg” race, which head lifeguard Sophia Osofsky likened to a sack-hop.

Of course, there will be swimming throughout the day while the lake is open. The organizers hope to also provide a dunk booth.

Overall, Osofsky said the season was a successful one, with an average of 25 people visiting the beach each day. The beach has been open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A summer day camp also ran on location, Monday through Friday, for six weeks.

“It was a great season, we love having everyone around and we love having people coming back and enjoying the summer with us,” Osofsky said.

A popular service was the beach’s kayak rentals — the Recreation Department has five.

One obstacle, however, was a high fecal count in the water from wildlife like geese.

“We’ve been working with the health department to figure out why our test results were high,” said Recreation Director Catherine Prentice.

During the off season, a company called Traditional Builders is slated to complete a new bathhouse facility for use at the beach; ideally it will open by next summer.
